Diverse teams bring fresh perspectives, drive creativity, and foster an environment of collaboration that leads to better solutions and innovations. At Netcentrix, we understand that when we elevate women in technology, we’re not just investing in talent, we’re shaping the future of tech itself.

Meet Sian - Senior Software Developer

Q: What is your current role and core responsibilities?

A: I work as a Senior Software Developer. As a developer, I design, write, test, and debug software applications. Being in a senior role within the team means that I oversee development projects. So, I make decisions over which tasks to prioritise in the development lifecycle, collaborate with other members of the team to make things happen, and communicate with our clients and other key stakeholders.

Q: How did you get started in IT?

A: I actually didn’t start my career in IT until I was in my mid to late 20’s. I was drifting around unsure what I wanted to do long-term, when I saw an advertisement for a short IT pathway course with a training/recruitment company. I had been interested in computers since university, so I decided to dig into the last of a little inheritance and invested it in myself. Taking the course was one of the best decisions I ever made as it led to a job as an IT Support Engineer, subcontracted to a multi-national company.

Q: Have you noticed a lack of women in the technology industry throughout your career? If yes, how has this changed as your career has progressed?

A: I have always worked with companies that employed plenty of women. However, for most of my career, I have been the only woman in a technical role. I am seeing more and more women in technology in roles like project management, so I hope it will just be a matter of time before gender diversity is reflected in technical roles too.

Meet Kirsten - Service Desk Analyst

Q: What is your current role and core responsibilities?

A: I am a Systems Engineer, this means I diagnose and resolve hardware, software and network issues for clients. I also monitor and maintain client systems and provide technical support to them where needed.

Q: What is the one piece of advice you would give to a young woman looking to enter the industry or just at the beginning of her career in technology?

A: My advice to anyone entering the industry would be – don’t bluff! Proactively look to learn from more experienced colleagues.

I’d also say to look for mentors and people who want to help you pursue a career in IT. When you approached me about taking part in this interview, I asked my 20-year-old daughter (who is doing BioMed degree) how many of her school friends went into IT or are studying it. She couldn’t think of a single one, and said to me, “IT tends to be all boys, very few girls are encouraged to get into it”.

When I asked her to expand, she said teachers would actively say to boys that they were good at IT and should consider studying it, but she never heard a teacher say that to a girl. She also compared it to the sciences, saying girls are encouraged to do Biology or Chemistry (at a push!), but never Physics!

The idea that some of her female classmates could’ve been interested in going further with IT, but didn’t because they lacked people waving their flag, is very disappointing to me. So, I’d tell young people to look for individuals who will positively encourage them!

“I love being part of our fast-paced Product team. I started out as a Product Assistant, progressed to a Junior Product Manager, and by taking on increasing responsibilities within the team and receiving support in gaining new qualifications, such as my Product Management certification, I’ve taken another significant and exciting step in my career.”

Meet Steph - Developer Team Lead

Q: What is your current role and core responsibilities?

A: My current role is Developer Team Lead. I am responsible for 3 Junior members of staff within our department, answering to the Head of Software Development.

Q: What do you think businesses should be doing to encourage more girls and young women to consider careers in technology?

A: I think the perfect place to start is schools, for me my love of IT started at such a young age and children that young are making happy memories. If businesses show them how fun IT can be that is something that can stick with them for life. Building a computer as a child is no different to building with Lego or Meccano (apart from the obvious adult supervision required!) Not only hardware but also showing them the things they can build as a software developer too can be fun. My eldest daughter has recently done a roblox course where she used some basic commands to build a roblox game. She loved it and can’t wait to use software development more!

Q: What is it about technology that keeps you engaged and passionate about your role?

A: I love the ever changing field that is IT. No two days are the same and not every solution works for every problem. I love analysing and investigating different issues. I love working with customers and helping them to get the best out of what they need. This job gives me the opportunity to do everything that I enjoy from a career.

Meet Siobhan - Service Desk Analyst

Q: What is your current role and core responsibilities?

A: I’ve been working as a Service Desk Analyst for just over two years now. In my current role, I have various responsibilities, including making changes to customer accounts, creating new users, managing leavers, and assigning user licenses. I also tackle a small number of fault cases.

Q: How did you get started in IT?

A: I actually started my journey in IT when I first joined, received internal training and support for my Microsoft Fundamentals qualification. This training covered the basics of Microsoft, including licensing and app knowledge, serving as the initial step toward becoming a qualified Microsoft engineer.

I am currently pursuing Meraki FIT Accreditation for Meraki Support engineering, and I’m hoping to complete that soon, alongside further in-house training for Azure Active Directory and Azure Virtual Desktop.

Q: What is it about technology that keeps you engaged and passionate about your role?

A: For me, it’s the constant opportunities to learn from my colleagues. Elite Group is very committed to my professional development, and this training fuels my passion for technology. The more knowledge I have, the better I can help our customers and be successful in my role!
